Day in Hotel Green Plaza Hakone
Hotel Green Plaza Hakone is a wonderful Japanese-style spa resort that offers a true retreat experience. We stayed one night in a spacious Japanese-Western room, which had two Western beds and a large tatami seating area that converted into a cozy futon sleeping space—sleeping on a futon was surprisingly comfortable! Yes, it takes a little effort to get there (train, cable car, gondola from Odawara Station), but that’s part of the charm. Once you arrive, you’re at the foot of Mt. Fuji, surrounded by nature, and fully immersed in a traditional onsen atmosphere. The lobby offers complimentary tea in the afternoons, but you’ll want to be out exploring—Lake Ashi, nearby sulfur springs (don’t miss the famous black eggs!), and stunning views are all close by. In the evening, most guests wear their hotel-provided yukata and slippers to dinner, which adds to the charm. Dinner is a highlight—an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring made-to-order sushi, sashimi, tempura, soba, curry, sukiyaki, carved steak, and more (our daughter went back six times!). Drinks are extra, but there’s a full bar. After dinner, unwind in the onsen baths, open until midnight—definitely a must-do. While we weren’t the only foreigners, the hotel seems to cater mostly to a local crowd, which we really appreciated. Staff speak English and made everything easy. After the fast pace of Tokyo, Hakone offered the perfect slow-down. This stay was one of the most memorable parts of our trip.

The view of Mt. Fuji is exceptional! We stayed in a Western/Japanese style room with a view of Mt. Fuji (only because the rooms with private onsen were no longer available). We literally stared at the mountain all evening and again the next morning - majestic! You wouldn't need a room with a view though if it's not available because there is a perfect spot in the garden and from the public onsens (which are also stunning) to catch sight of the mountain. It's a bit of a trek to get to the hotel (via a 1 hour bus ride from the train station in Odawara or a combination of train and cable car (the hotel is literally a 5 minute walk from the 2nd last cable car stop) or a 40 minute taxi ride. Dinner and breakfast are served buffet style with lots to choose from (sushi was excellent and they provide individual hotpot which made for a fun experience). The only downside for us were the beds and pillows - which offered very little comfort.

The Mt Fuji views were amazing. We enjoyed the onsen experience each day. The ropeway was easy to get to and took us to the lake and into gora, so we could explore surrounding attractions. There was a beautiful Christmas performance with a pianist, violinist and viola player, as well as complimentary Christmas drinks at dinner. The buffet breakfast and dinner had a good variety of Japanese and Japanese style Western food - all very good quality and fresh. Staff were lovely.

Susan

Outstanding dinner and breakfast (included in the price), so many choices, sashimi, sushi, and fresh seafood were outstanding and I even didn't have enough room in my stomach to try other dishes or the desserts. The Onsen was nice with very good hair and facial products. Normally you could see Mt Fuji from the open air Onsen. But there was big fog when we arrived. The next day morning we saw Mt Fuji from the viewing point of the hotel.

There was a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji from our bedroom window. The buffet had a wide selection, with options that could be made for you at the counter. We were lucky to be there the night of a lobby concert, where the string triplet JEWEL (https://www.hgp.co.jp/hakone/gallery) played the audiences favourites.
